Joe Bassindale
Invaluable “hands-on experience” is how Joe Bassindale describes his job as a manufacturing engineer at Modine Manufacturing Company in Harrodsburg, Ky. Modine develops, manufactures and markets heat exchangers and heat storage technology to the automotive, trucking and commercial HVAC industries.
Modine has been a member of KAM since 1983.
Even at a young age, Joe enjoyed designing and engineering things with a set of Legos®. Throughout high school all signs pointed him toward engineering and Michigan Tech University, where in May 2005 he received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, with a minor in enterprise (business). He was offered an internship during summer 2004 at Modine and subsequently landed a full time position. Today, as a manufacturing engineer, Joe’s primary responsibilities are maintaining production and addressing installations of new equipment.
As a rookie in manufacturing Joe says he is learning some things that only experience can teach. “In production, you need to learn as you go on what issues you need to resolve now, realizing that not every issue has the same priority. Some problems are solved quickly and the solution is common sense – a blunt answer”, he said.
The ability to see end results quickly is satisfying for Joe. He also has found good communication skills to be a key to quick problem-solving, since on the manufacturing floor he works with “an array of people - from upper management to salesmen to floor operators”. Experience on the manufacturing floor, along with his education, is good preparation for the future, according to Joe.
A native
of Green Bay, Wis., Joe is one of four children. Although his two sisters
and brother are still up north, he would love to see his brother come
to Kentucky for a college internship. Joe enjoys spending his free time
participating in outdoor activities like fishing, hunting, camping and
hiking.
